Our mission is to create a healthy and vibrant farm ecosystem where we grow tasty and nutritious food for our local community while protecting and enhancing the land's biodiversity. Wild Side Farm is a new project that endeavors to convert what was for many years a conventional dairy farm into a biodiverse farm. We are located on approximately 70 acres in front of Clear Wind Farm, by the beautiful white dairy barn you can see from Teer Road. As new stewards we are excited to learn from and connect with this land working towards rehabilitating the soil fertility, restoring water health, and increasing habitat for wildlife. We are in the beginning stages of putting in the necessary infrastructure. As we grow our farm, we’re working toward providing a bounty of nutrient-dense vegetables, berries, fruits, nuts, and more to the community. Check out what people have to say about our Wild Side Farm Products! "Our entire family looks forward to our weekly produce pick up at Wild Side Farm. Their vegetables are always fresh, tender and the tastiest around. The online ordering system is efficient and it’s obvious that Deb & Walt put their hearts & souls into their weekly harvests." "In times of Pandemic during the Holidays, I wanted to feel a sense of community again, and give the gift of “health” to my kids’ teachers. Wildside did ITby delivering a bounty of veggies right to the classroom. Everyone raved about their gift (“the sweetest I have had this year”). Cannot thank Deb and Walt enough for giving all of us the feeling of connection and peace. And their veggies felt like early Christmas this year.” "Okay, I knew I liked spinach. But then I tasted Wildside’s spinach… and it was a whole new world. And I had avoided turnips throughout my long life. OMG! Wildside’s turnips! I’m tellin’ ya! These folks grow some delicious vegetables. But, beyond that, they are friendly and fun. When they open again, let’s have a glass of wine at their picnic table."
The idea for Wild Side Farm began with Matt and Suzanne Case's desire to create a sustainable farm on a portion of their land that once was an old dairy farm. After reaching out to Walt and Debbie Tysinger with their idea, they moved forward together to embark on this new adventure. Walt and Debbie's interest in sustainable agriculture goes back many years beginning with growing home gardens, and developing an interest in organic farming. This led them to an internship on Sustenance Farm in Bear Creek with their 2-year-old daughter living in a tipi. Since then Walt has worked as an environmental educator and for the past 13+years was the Senior Land Manager for the Triangle Land Conservancy. He holds a B.S. in Natural Resource Management from the University of Maryland. He has completed two extensive permaculture design courses. Debbie's love for gardening began working beside her father when she was a young child and has been gardening in some fashion ever since. She has been a massage therapist for the last 20 years and has had an interest in herbalism for the last several years studying with Suki Roth for part of that time. The common thread here is that they've always had their hands in the dirt!! The farm will consist of vegetables, herbs, and flowers along with fruit, nuts, and berries. The old pastures and fallow agricultural fields surrounding the farm will be restored to diverse wildlife habitats hence the name Wild Side farm.
