As a local yarn store owner 15+ years ago, I learned a lot about quality yarn and fibers.  Texture and the feel of yarn forms the creative experience.  Time spent knitting and crocheting brings joy, a time to relax, think and meditate.  As the best meals are cooked with quality ingredients, the best yarn creations are made with quality yarn.  We strive to create yarn that is a joy to feel in your hands, soft next to skin and classically long lasting.  We respect your time spent creating with fiber by providing quality natural yarn that will withstand the test of time. Soil health is a top priority for our farming practices because all life is dependent on productive soils. The merino sheep move every 2-5 days to new pastures to promote deep root growth which increases plant growth, soil carbon sequestration and water retention. These results enhance our soils by reducing soil runoff and increasing organic matter and soil biology. Moving regularly and giving the pastures a rest time between grazing, also decreases the worm load in the sheep. This reduces stress on the sheep which helps create stronger wool growth. We hoe the sticky weeds that get in the sheep’s wool instead of spraying with herbicides. Much time is spent caring for our pastures to increase the health of the soil and the sheep. Once a year in February or March, the merino sheep at Simple Hill Farm are sheared.  Here at the farm, we carefully skirt and pull out as much vegetative matter as we can.  We then send the wool to a mill that processes natural fibers into yarn. Once the yarn has returned from the mill, I dye the yarn with plant dyes and natural mineral mordants to create a rainbow of brilliant colors. Some of the dye plants are grown on our farm. We also sell undyed yarn as our flock is a range of natural colors including cream, silver, light brown and dark brown.
