Just another WordPress.com weblog Alex and Rocket relaxing after the Dog Clinic at the Wayne County Fair grounds Rocket and Jet playing in our little orchard We are the Hettick Family. I am Heather and my husband is Kelly and we have two adult children – Jade and Alex. We live on a small farm in NE Ohio, about an hour South of Cleveland and have been here since 1995. On our 5 acre farm, we produce registered Texel sheep (who are enrolled in the NSIP -National Sheep Improvement Program) plus some crosses for breeding stock, meat goats (mostly crosses of Boer, Kiko and some dairy influence, wool products and meat lambs. We also have a basenji who participates in AKC events and we are hoping to breed this year as she is both a healthy and excptionally good representative of her breed and most of all, I want a puppy from her. We participate in the Seville farmers market held on Saturdays from Memorial Day through September and we have a membership in Local Roots in Wooster, where we can sell our products all year long. It is a cooperative of local farmers and consumers that is set up like a store that sells local food as well as art in Wooster, OH. We sell mostly homemade jellies and jams, dryer balls, and yarns, but also berries, potatoes, onions and succulent arrangements. We have three gardens and plant what we like to eat and experiment with a few new things each year so it’s not really a serious production garden, but we enjoy the interaction at the markets and it’s a way to share our excess. We also grow a variety of berries, grapes, fruit and nut trees on our property. We are not certified organic, but avoid chemicals in our gardening and use many organic methods. I am always happy to discuss my methods with anyone who is interested. Our family enjoys sharing our lives with pets. Alex, our 22 year old son, likes small animals and has his own fish tank and a cat in his apartment in Columbus. He should be graduating with his Civil Engineering degree from Ohio State next spring. Jade, our 26 year old daughter, is working at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center in the Emergency Department and is an avid cat lover. Her “Moose” is very well taken care of – almost spoiled! We enjoy dogs as and currently have a young Basenji named Scarlett, Zamaradi’s Moonstruck Naughty Girl, who is an AKC conformation champion and enjoys some of the lure testing that AKC provides. I’d love to lure course with her, but there aren’t many trials nearby. We are planning a litter from her this winter, from GCH Darkmoon Ozymandias, aka Walter, a lovely Brindle dog and are hoping for a few nice show pups. Scarlett is actually our 5th basenji. Our previous basenji, Jet (Karnak’s Painted on the Moonstruck Sky) tried going to dog shows in her younger days and even lure coursing, but preferred to be a farm dog and bed warmer and we lost her in early 2023 to a stroke and miss her terribly. We also have English Shepherds to help with the farm and keep our young basenji busy and entertained. Rocket is a very bright and sweet tempered English Shepherd who helps me with the sheep occasionally, but he’s 12 and slowing down a bit. We brought in a young ES last fall, Lotus. She’s a bit more nervous and fearful than Rocket, but I’m hoping she calms down a bit as she ages. She loves hunting ground dwelling animals in our pasture and is an avid digger. She and Scarlett are good playmates – wrestling and playing chase, but sometimes bicker over Lotus’ toys or bed, which Scarlett doesn’t really seem to want, but enjoys pushing Lotus’ buttons. This page has the following sub pages. Very interestign website! I enjoyed checking it out. I enjoyed your website! It sounds like you keep pretty busy on your farm. I will be sending an email soon, I promise! Hi Heather! Look forward to hearing about Rocket! Has he quieted down for you any? Am sure that he will not let ANY predators get close to you there!!
