With the hyper-convenience of modern life, many of us can only operate a microwave. As a result, enjoying a nutritional home-cooked meal is becoming a luxury! Limited access to fresh, healthy, affordable food is an issue in Kentucky communities. According to U.S. data, the Food Research and Action Center white papers, “Poverty, food insecurity, and poor nutrition have serious consequences for the health and well-being of children, adults, and older adults, including a greater risk for chronic disease and poor mental health. Beyond the consequences for individuals and families, these consequences also have costly implications for the economy and health care system.” This is why the Kentucky Innovative Farming Network was created to advance food distribution in Kentucky’s urban areas and to inspire youth to connect to the land; we created Thelma’s Garden Academy. Through S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math),we transfer the legacy of agriculture to the next generation. Most importantly, urban farming communities have a brighter future by implementing food security with nutritional value.
