Produce Farm
to provide healthy, tasty, fresh and great quality food to our community through sustainable farming methods.
We are a husband/wife team that has enjoyed farming since our childhood, having parents that loved farming whether in their backyards or on small acreages. Our farming hero is our uncle who was a market gardener and still went to the market up into his 90’s. We both work full-time in off farm jobs but we hope Paul will be able to retire this year and go full-time farm! We have two grown children but no grandchildren as of yet since we’re still waiting for our son and daughter to get married. The way it looks that might be happening this year! We have two Boxers Ruby and Roxy and two farm cats as well as a stray that calls our farm home. Although not certified organic, it has been our practice since day one of owning the farm to avoid all synthetic chemicals and use only natural methods. Our animals are raised on pasture with fresh air and sunshine in their daily diet. We have mobile chicken/turkey tractors to keep them in at night (to avoid predation). The broiler chickens are moved daily across the pasture. The turkeys and egg layer chickens have an electric net fence to protect them from foxes and coyotes during the day. We make a lot of our own compost for the vegetable garden using leaves, yard and vegetable waste and the bedding from the mobile egg laying coop as well as the brooder where we raise the baby poultry. Any compost other than this is purchased from a local supplier that is organic certified. We want the products that we raise to be nutrient dense and free of chemicals and we are now using GMO free feed. We supply a variety of produce on a little over an acre of garden area. We use only natural products on our garden that are OMRI approved and do not use any synthetic chemicals fertilizers or herbicides. From a variety of root crops, greens, peppers, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables, we strive to harvest as much variety as possible. Using season extension and producing our own seedlings in our plant nursery, we strive to be early to market with a variety of good tasting high quality vegetables. Our goal is to harvest enough for those needing only a small order to those with larger demands. Our egg layers are made up of several different heritage breeds of chicken. Our flock consists of Black Australorps, Brown Leghorns, Easter Eggers, Plymouth Barred Rocks, White Barred Rocks, and we have a few Hyline chickens which gives us a very colorful egg display. Our chickens are allowed to free range inside an electric fence that is moved around the farm on a regular basis. Their job on the farm besides producing eggs is helping to fertilize the fields and with insect control As soon as our chicks are old enough to be removed from the brooder they are placed out on pasture in mobile chicken coops. Our pasture is free of any synthetic chemicals. They are moved to a new location daily so that they have a fresh supply of new grass and bugs. This keeps the chickens clean and allows them all the fresh grass and bugs they want to consume. We raise the chickens for 6+ weeks and they are then processed by a USDA inspected facility into whole birds and pieced birds giving our customers a choice of what works best for their family. You will taste the difference in this tender, juicy meat. The feed that is used is NON GMO and has no antibiotics or growth hormones in it, so you can eat with confidence knowing that while the chickens were at Oak Grove Valley Farm they were treated with excellent care and fed a natural diet
