The last working farm in Columbia, Maryland — 6.4 acres on Harriet Tubman Lane, farmed organically for over 40 years. We cultivate communities where people and nature thrive together. Our Farm Stand runs Saturdays during the growing season with vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings ($3-4 each), plus fresh produce like kale, chard, okra, basil, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. We also steward the 6-acre Green Farmacy Garden in Fulton, founded by USDA ethnobotanist Dr. James Duke, home to ~300 medicinal plant species organized by health condition. No synthetic chemicals, no artificial fertilizers — regenerative practices, food forest systems, and bioretention. Over 4,300 pounds of produce distributed to food-insecure households in 2024.
The Community Ecology Institute envisions a world of thriving communities rooted in healthy relationships with nature. Their mission is to cultivate communities where people and nature thrive together, focusing on community-level change at the intersection of environment, education, equity, and health. Their land at Freetown Farm was part of the Underground Railroad and is now within Columbia, Maryland, a place founded to be "a garden for growing people."
