At Tubby Creek Farm we are firmly committed to regenerative agriculture – we want to grow food in a way that not only sustains the land but heals and improves it. Likewise, we strive to support the health, well being and livelihood of all those who our farming touches, including, of course, the people who eat our food! For these reasons, we use no chemically synthesized pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. We are Certified Naturally Grown, which means we use sustainable methods to build the health of plants from the soil up and using our skills and abilities to capitalize on what nature provides. We go so far as to shun certain botanically-derived pesticides that are permitted in certified organic production but that we think are too damaging to biological systems. We endeavor to create as much fertility on the farm as possible by making compost and using cover crops and green manures. As our farm matures, we plan to integrate livestock into our permaculture design, seeking to “close the loop” as much as we can to make our farm function as a self-sustaining organism. Our land is new to us and in transition. Much of our cropland was used to grow conventional soybeans in 2010, meaning that chemical herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers may have been used in as recently as 2010. We look forward to the challenge of bring the land back to health and productivity. Consumers like you are rightfully concerned about the health and safety of your food. Lack of labeling of GMO ingredients, recent outbreaks of food-borne illnesses, and concern over the eroding integrity of the organic label has left even the most savvy food shopper reeling. Marketing buzzwords like “natural”, “green” and “healthy” confuse instead of clarify safe and healthy food choices. We have the answer: know your farmer. The best way to learn about our production practices is to see them in action by visiting the farm. Better yet, come volunteer and get some firsthand experience! Visit the Contact Us page for information about visiting the farm or with any additional questions about our production practices that you might have.
