Emu
Founded in 1994 by Ann Merkel on the 80-acre Lawrence, Kansas farm where she was born and raised. A true farm-to-finish emu operation — Ann hatched eggs in incubators, raised chicks in large safe pens, and processed everything on-ranch. The flock of 20-65 emus was raised on optimized feed with no growth hormones or antibiotics. Products included pure emu oil (increasingly popular with the medical community for treating burn victims), emu oil body products made with business partners, low-fat emu meat in multiple cuts, and fresh blue-green emu eggs. Ann was a fixture at the Downtown Lawrence Farmers Market for over 15 years. NOTE: Ann Merkel passed away February 19, 2023 at age 83 — ranch status unknown.
