Prairieland Market has a deep connection to Salina and the surrounding community. Founded in 1978 as an organic buyers’ club, the market has evolved over the years into a local and organic food market. Prairieland Market is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, built upon its staff, donors, subscribers, producers, board members and volunteers. Toencouragehealthy food choices,providenutritional food education, and access to local, organic, and craft foods, in order topromoteenhanced well-being for thecommunity. Prairieland Market aims to create a food market that promotes personal, community, and environmental nourishment by supportinglocal/regional and organic food production, as well as consumer education, with access for all. We provide our community with a market that cares about their needs and increases knowledge about the value of local food. We support sustainable agriculture practices while minimizing packaging, transportation, and food waste. We promote and support local producers of high-quality food products to help our customers eat healthfully. People to producers, farm to fork, we believe relationships provide better opportunities for fresh food. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, provides qualifying low-income households with food benefits, access to a healthy diet, and education on food preparation and nutrition. In Kansas, the program is known as the Food Assistance Program. The Food Assistance Program serves as the first line of defense against hunger. It provides crucial support to elderly households, to low-income working households, to other low-income households that include the unemployed or disabled, and to households transitioning from welfare to work. Food assistance customers can spend their benefits to buy eligible nutritious food, plants, and seeds to grow food for their household to eat.
