Rising from the ashes — a small family farm on 100 acres specializing in muscadine grapes, pasture-raised poultry, and seasonal vegetables. Originally Bennett Vineyards, before that the Bennetts ran the land as a tobacco farm. The vineyard was started around 1989. Phoenix Farms started in 2016; current owners took over the vineyard in 2022. Our chicks arrive at the farm the day after hatching and are kept in a brooder with supplemental heat until about 2 weeks old. They are then moved to the pasture in mobile, open-floored pens that are moved daily to a fresh patch to give them access to insects and green forage. The open-floored pen allows natural foraging all while providing them with shelter from inclement weather, shade, and protection from predators. They are fed a 19% protein (free choice) grain ration that is non-medicated and non-GMO. Our ducklings follow the same protocol — brooder for two weeks, then daily-rotated pasture pens with non-GMO, non-medicated feed and full access to natural forage. We also keep goats, geese, guineas, and peacocks on the farm, and host farm stays, u-pick muscadine harvests, and seasonal events like our Wine Down Pasture Walk and Harvest Festival.
