Growing up in Pennsylvania, I would go with my family to pick up meat, eggs and milk at a local farm. I’ve never forgotten that experience and how beautiful and free the animals were. Marylee is the first woman to serve as president of the Duplin County Cattlemen’s Association. Born and raised in urban city life in Canada, I always wanted to get out to the country. Gabe’s dream for the farm has been to offer pasture-raised chicken — and we made that dream come true! Our mutual love of animals led us to raising chickens and two pigs, who happily roamed our backyard on the intracoastal waterway. When we outgrew our backyard in 2015, we traded our boat for a tractor with the goal of becoming more self sufficient. Life circumstances continued to push us towards farming. Shortly after buying our land, Gabe was diagnosed with cancer. We wanted to know what was in the food we ate and how it was raised. A final catalyst for us was reading about the how animals were treated in conventional farming systems. We took the leap of faith, beginning what is now known as Farm Asea. We proudly raise heritage breed pigs, cows, and chickens. We rotate our pastures, which allows our animals to get all of the nutrients available without depleting or over grazing our land. This is essential for long term pasture growth and sustainability. We live by the motto that every animal should be respected and cared for in a manner that is fitting for the gift it provides us. It is of the upmost importance that our animals are respected, happy and loved. We believe this happiness, and the fresh sea air we get here in Hampstead, NC makes for the best tasting meat.
