So now you know the fascinating story of the Pineywoods, but why is it important to preserve this ancient breed? It comes down to the future of agriculture. Once a specific gene pool is lost it can...
Grove Creek Farm was founded in 1994 by Robert E. Rhoades, a farmer and anthropologist, as a personal statement on returning to America after decades of international agricultural service. After his passing in 2010, his daughter Daniella and son-in-law James developed it into a working cattle farm, continuing his legacy of land and animal stewardship. The farm has a rich history, having been a row crop operation since the 1940s before the family shifted focus to soil health and regenerative practices in 1990. The land itself has a deep anthropological history, with evidence of human occupation dating back to the Paleo-Indian period, and was once part of the Creek confederacy before becoming a pioneer settlement in the late 18th century, growing various crops and practicing mixed animal husbandry. The farm was purchased by Dr. Rhoades in 1993, saving it from being developed into a large subdivision, and he transformed it into a working classroom for studying its agrarian history and ecology. James and Daniella continue to build on this foundation, focusing on high-quality forages and low-stress cattle handling to produce their grass-finished beef. Daniella, a UGA horticulture graduate, manages the business and enjoys spending time with the calves, while James, also a horticulturist, handles equipment operation and land improvement, continuing the dream of building a healthy farm ecosystem. They have partnered with various organizations like EQIP, NRCS, Georgia Soil and Water Conservation, and Partners for Fish and Wildlife to complete land improvement grants, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability. They are also proud members of the Georgia Forage and Grassland Council, the Pineywoods Cattle Registry and Breeder's Association, and the Georgia Cattlemen's Association, reflecting their dedication to their craft and community. The farm's history includes periods of cotton and soybean cultivation, with the land being badly eroded and soils deplete
