We’re a first-generation farming family on 30 acres of Southern red clay in Cedar Grove, North Carolina. Austin and Samantha Genke, along with Austin’s wife Dani, started Boxcarr Farms in 2009 growing heirloom vegetables and raising heritage pigs and pastured poultry. In 2015 we built our 2,900 sq ft creamery and launched Boxcarr Handmade Cheese — blending milk from our own herd of 120+ Alpine, Nubian, and Saanen dairy goats with Jersey cow milk from a neighboring family dairy. Inspired by small Italian farmstead creameries and guided by local cheesemaker Alessandra Trompeo, we handcraft 13+ cheese varieties: bloomy robiolas, beer-washed rinds, cold-smoked aged wheels, and pimentón-rubbed blocks. Cottonbell won a 2026 World Championship Cheese Contest Bronze Medal. Our cheeses have also won at the American Cheese Society (2016, 2018), NC State Fair Best in Show (2015, 2017), and Good Food Awards (2017).
