Produce Farm
A freed man traveled north on the Mississippi River from the Civil War-torn south and found himself in Defiance, Missouri, ready to start a life for himself. He was then befriended by the Fluesmeier family, who lived on property next to that belonging to the family of Daniel Boone. That man’s name was Joseph Chandler. Pictured:Francis and Kate Fluesmeier Joseph Chandler worked on the farm of the Fluesmeiers for many years and was eventually deeded the land as an act of appreciation for all he and his wife, Ellen, had done for them. Joseph Chandler lived on the land until he died in 1952, but his story and impact remain very alive through the community of Defiance and Chandler Hill Vineyards. Pictured: Joseph and Ellen Chandler Early in the 21st century, the current owners of Chandler Hill Vineyards set a goal to create a Midwest winery like no other. Now, the venue sits at the top of a hill overlooking the gorgeous Missouri Wine Country. Many century-old artifacts have been uncovered and are on display in our tasting room. Even the stones from Joseph Chandler’s cabin foundation were carefully removed and now surround the refreshing waterfall in front of the building. Once home to an inspiring man’s modest cabin, this land now welcomes guests from near and far to gather, celebrate, and create memories of their own.
