About Our Farm & Family A Farmer and Scientist David Newman is both a farmer and scientist. His degrees are in animal science, and he holds a Ph.D in meat science and muscle biology, focused on meat quality. “As I became a scientist and involved in education, I applied what I was learning to understand what we could do better. As a farmer, we look outside the animal, but as a scientist we look inside-out, and when you can understand what that means, what the metrics are, how to best raise and breed and feed, and how to make our product better, you can apply that every day.” Farming has always been a foundation of our family. My grandparents and parents were involved in pork production. There were some very challenging economic times for everyone in pork production, and we realized we were going to have to do something different in order to be sustainable long term. In the 1990s, my parents decided to go back to their roots. We would have to produce at a very large scale to be successful in the commercial sector, so my father decided we should focus on quality. We changed our genetic program and our nutrition program. We became Certified Humane®. We never confine any animals — ‘everybody’ has pasture access — and we chose to focus on Berkshire pigs for their quality.
The Newman family has been proudly producing quality pork since 1991. David Newman, a farmer and scientist, holds degrees in animal science and a Ph.D in meat science and muscle biology, focusing on meat quality.
