The McKittrick Farmers Mercantile, a two-story brick commercial building, was built circa 1897 at 500 Washington Street. It served as the commercial and entertainment center of McKittrick, housing a general store and post office on the first floor, and an assembly area on the second. The building's period of significance is from its construction through c1945 when the store closed and the post office moved next door to what is now Joey's Birdhouse B&B. The area has a rich history of settlement, first by English descent farmers in the early 1800s, and later by German settlers from Hermann.
