Stephanie and Richard Schertz "came home" to their 13 acres in Lucas, Texas in the summer of 2013. Starting with just overgrazed land, they built everything--fences, barns, water, electricity and a house. Stephanie, an agronomist, put her lifelong passions for conservation, sustainability and regeneration to work, enriching the soil, growing grass in pastures, and establishing a tallgrass prairie wildflower meadow. The goats moved to the farm in the summer of 2014; chickens were added in 2017. With family roots in farming, both Stephanie and Richard have lived with gardens since childhood. Organic or all-natural production was an easy choice. "Mostly we found mechanical ways to solve our problems, plus we didn't want to harm the birds, bees and butterflies". Farm and community activities are important. The Farm has its own beauty and serenity that they wanted to share through camping, volunteering, events, a farmstand, and pick-your-own days. Stephanie is a founding member of the Lucas Farmers Market Committee. Ultimately, the couple wants to produce healthy, delicious food, educate the community as to how food is produced and demonstrate the seasonality of crops grown in North Texas.
